"Vide-dressing" in Villeneuve: time for the big clear-out

Clothes we love, but no longer wear

We all accumulate things. It's almost inevitable when you love fashion, when you thrift, when you stumble upon a piece you can't leave for someone else. For years, I have build a wardrobe with that logic, finds, favourites, brands that have a real identity. And for years, I found it hard to part with them. Not because I wore everything, but because for me, fine objects are part of the decor. A Sonia Rykiel coat neatly folded on a shelf, a pair of Air Jordan trainers in their open box, that contributes to the space. It’s as much to be looked at as it is to be worn.

The talons, that's the most glaring case. We buy them because they're nice-looking, because they do something for a silhouette, because we tell ourselves we're going to wear them. And then in reality, we hardly ever wear them. Not because we don't like them anymore, but because daily life doesn't really look like the occasions we'd imagined when buying them. They take up space, they stay there, and we keep looking at them without touching them.

Except at one point, It takes up too much room. You lose weight, your style evolves, a cut that used to be perfect no longer is. And above all, you realise that you always wear the same things. The truth is that good basics are more than enough, and that pieces that haven't been touched in two years deserve to be in circulation rather than gathering dust.

That is what I do on the 10th May at the jumble sale in Place Jean Jaurès, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, from 7 am. I am parting with pieces that I really loved, some Stüssy, of Air Jordan 1, you Sonia Rykiel, The Kooples, Acne Studios, of Levi's, a sense of Talk, of talons, of robes, jeans, shorts, because keeping them out of attachment when they are no longer part of my daily life no longer makes sense. Letting go is also a form of curation. It is choosing what really remains, rather than keeping everything by default.

That is the exact same logic as in my work as a tattoo artist: not everything that happens is set in stone, we choose what truly has value, what will last, what deserves to take up space.
