Hello everyone! I told you the Acne Studios x Frédéric Malle party on rue Froissart. This time, we're leaving the shop and the pretty bottles lined up to talk about what really goes on in my bathroom.
I waited several weeks before writing because at 70 euros for the shower gel and 80 euros for the body lotion, an initial "it smells very nice" would have been no use to anyone. I like both of them, but I don't use them in the same way and, if I had to keep only one, my choice is very clear.
First, this smell
Both treatments feature the Acne Studios fragrance by Frédéric Malle. On my skin, it is clean, musky, slightly powdery and very soft, but not sweet to the point of becoming sickening. That is often where I switch off with overly sweet fragrances: at first I adore them, then I want to open all the windows.
The shower gel leaves a slight trace after rinsing. The body milk is more prominent, then the fragrance comes over the top without turning the whole thing into an impenetrable cloud. Used together, the three products really prolong the scent on my skin.
Let's talk about the 70-euro shower gel
The bottle contains 200 ml. The product lathers well, has an immediate scent and remains subtle after the shower. I definitely do not use it every day. At that price, that would be hard to justify, even to myself.
I save it for the weekends, a night out or evenings when I have time to get ready without rushing between the bathroom and my wardrobe. In the end, that's perhaps how I appreciate it most. It keeps its feel-good side and I don't finish it in three weeks wondering afterwards why I did that.
The body milk is the one I would choose
Body milk is often much easier to use. The texture is light, it absorbs quickly and I can get dressed straight away. I hate waiting ten minutes in a bathroom because a cream refuses to sink in, so this point matters enormously to me.
I mainly put it on before perfume. On my skin, it's the product that makes the biggest difference to how long the scent lasts. If you already like the fragrance and are hesitating between the two treatments, that's the one I'd get. I get more out of the body lotion and it better justifies its place in my routine.
Does the trio really make any difference?
Yes, especially over time. The shower gel leaves a first trace, the body lotion locks it onto the skin and the perfume holds better on top of that. I generally reserve the trio for dinners and nights out: the shower, the lotion, the perfume, followed by the moment when I change outfit three times even though the first one was fine.
150 euros for two treatments: my honest review
Both products cost 150 euros together, not including the perfume. That's expensive. If you are simply looking for a good shower gel and a moisturising lotion, there are obviously much cheaper products that will do the job just as well.
Here, you are also paying for the scent, the object and the pleasure of prolonging a fragrance you already love. I understand buying it as a treat for oneself or to complete the range, but not as an essential expense just because the bottle is very pretty.
Yes, bottles count too
I really like the pink, the shape and the typography. The bottles look like Acne Studios without needing to plaster the logo everywhere. I am bound to be drawn to that kind of consistency since I work on brand identities and websites with Minuit d’Orsay.
But a beautiful useless product remains a lovely object that takes up space. Here, fortunately, I continue to use both. The design adds something to the pleasure, it doesn't serve to excuse the rest.
So, would I buy them again?
The milk, yes, probably. It's the one I use the most and the one that really goes with the fragrance. The shower gel, perhaps, but much less regularly. I see it as a treat purchase, not as the product I'll automatically replace as soon as the bottle is empty.
You can find the launch party at Acne Studios and my article on Acne Studios by Frédéric Malle and Retrospect by Merit. At least you'll have the whole story, from the first time I smelled the perfume to the moment I had to admit that 70 euros for a shower gel was still a lot.
