Today I wanted to tell you about a bag you may already have spotted in my outfits, and one I’ve owned since I was 21: my khaki Marni Trunk. I had my eye on it at the time and dropped a rather unsubtle hint to my mum, because she gave it to me for my birthday. I then wore it almost every day for over a year, with absolutely everything, and it quickly became my favourite bag.
I’m 28 now, which means it has been with me for seven years. I wore it constantly, then much less for a while, before bringing it back out in recent years with slightly smarter outfits. And honestly, I still love it just as much. If I were choosing it today, I’d buy exactly the same model, especially in the same colour.
Khaki, a colour I wear all the time
Mine is khaki, a colour I’ve loved for years. My enormous tote bag, the one you can see in my outfit from 1 October, is green too. I wear the Marni with slightly smarter outfits, but also with Levi’s 501s, a checked shirt or a sweatshirt. That’s exactly what I love about it: I can pick it up without having to build my entire outfit around it.
I did consider buying it in another colour because, whenever I really love something, I have this little fear that I’ll never find it again. I looked at the other versions several times, but none appealed to me as much as the khaki. So I showed remarkable restraint, which is probably worth mentioning.
A genuinely practical concertina interior
The inside has a concertina design with several compartments, a zipped pocket and a very discreet little pocket at the back. It holds a surprising amount for a bag this size, and everything is easy to find because it doesn’t all end up in a muddle at the bottom.
I love putting my phone in the back pocket, but I invariably forget it’s there. Five minutes later, I’m searching everywhere, convinced I’ve lost it, before remembering that famous pocket. Seven years on, I still fall for it, so I think it’s safe to say that won’t change.
Why I wear it less often now
Its only real drawback, for me, is its size. At 21, I could take it almost anywhere. These days I very often have my laptop and camera with me, along with chargers, notebooks and everything else. Needless to say, none of that fits in the Marni.
For everyday life, I reach for my big green tote much more often. It’s simply a different size, and I’ve always loved oversized bags too. The trouble is, the bigger they are, the more I put in them: my laptop, Fujifilm, chargers, notebooks and easily half my life. I now save the Marni for days when I don’t need to carry all of that, for lunch, dinner or simply whenever I fancy wearing it.
What I Carry in My Marni Trunk
When I carry it, I try to be sensible: my card holder, keys, phone, Aesop hand cream and a perfume. At the moment, I often take my little Acne Studios fragrance by Frédéric Malle, which I mentioned in my current perfume favourites.
I sometimes try to squeeze in my Kodak too, but that involves serious negotiations with the compartments. The bag is very structured, which is why it keeps its shape so beautifully, but it has no tolerance for one extra item. I still maintain it could probably double as self-defence in an emergency.
My favourite bag, seven years on
After all these years, it naturally has a few small marks, but I think it has aged brilliantly. Its shape hasn’t changed, khaki is still easy to wear and the design doesn’t feel dated. It is discreet too: no enormous logo, just a recognisable shape if you know the model.
I wear it less than I did at 21 because my days, and everything I carry, have changed. That hasn’t altered its place in my wardrobe. It works just as well with smarter outfits as it does with 501s, a checked shirt or a sweatshirt, and I’m always pleased to bring it out again.
More than anything, it will always be the bag I spotted, hinted about to my mum and received from her for my 21st birthday. I don’t think I’ll ever part with it. I simply have to accept that it will never hold my laptop and camera at the same time.
