My Marni Trunk Bag Review: Why I Still Love It Years Later

My mum gave me my Marni Trunk bag for my 22nd birthday, and I think I carried it almost every day for at least a year.

It was the bag I reached for constantly and wore with almost everything.

Then I used it far less for a few years. Not because I had stopped loving it, but because I began carrying my laptop much more often and, unsurprisingly, it does not fit. I ended up with my Marni plus a tote bag, which was not exactly practical.

Recently, I have started carrying it much more again, especially on days when I know I do not need to take very much with me. I still love it just as much.

Why I Still Love the Marni Trunk

What I particularly love about the Marni Trunk is how polished yet discreet it feels.

There is no enormous logo, so it is not immediately obvious that it is Marni. People who know the design recognise it, but otherwise it remains understated, which is exactly what I like.

Mine is khaki, and I find the colour incredibly easy to wear. It is a little more interesting than black while still going with almost everything. I wear it with denim, beige, white and black.

More importantly, it has not dated visually after all these years. I could easily buy it today. I loved it so much that I once considered another colour, probably a fear-of-missing-out situation, but none of them has ever looked as good as the khaki.

A Surprisingly Practical Interior

The interior has an accordion construction with several compartments, a zipped pocket and a small, discreet pocket at the back.

I love using that little pocket for my phone, although I immediately forget I have put it there. Five minutes later, I am searching everywhere, convinced I have lost it, before remembering that famous pocket.

The rest of the interior is genuinely well organised. Everything can be separated easily and, despite its compact shape, the bag holds quite a lot.

It is also very structured. I am fairly sure you could defend yourself with it if necessary. 😂

What I Carry in My Marni Trunk

When I carry it now, I deliberately try to take only the essentials.

I always have my cardholder, Aesop hand cream and a perfume with me. At the moment, I often carry my small Acne Studios by Frédéric Malle fragrance, which I mentioned in my article about the perfumes I am wearing at the moment.

And if I can find room, I take my Kodak too.

I think I may write a full article about what I always keep in my bag, because I have realised that I carry almost exactly the same things every time.

The One Real Drawback

For me, it is definitely the size.

If I only need my personal things, there is no problem. As soon as I need my laptop, it becomes complicated.

That is the main reason I stopped carrying it for a while. Larger bags allowed me to keep everything together.

Now I tend to carry it for lunch, dinner, a day when I do not need to work or simply whenever I want to leave the house with very little.

And actually, I think that is how I like it best.

A Bag I Will Keep for Years

I carried it constantly, then hardly at all, and now I am rediscovering it.

It inevitably has a few small marks after all these years, but honestly, it has aged beautifully.

And because it was a gift from my mum for my 22nd birthday, it has a particular sentimental value too.

I do not think it is a bag I will ever part with.
