I grew up in Avignon<\/strong>, so the Festival<\/strong> has really been a part of my everyday life forever. It's not something I experience as a tourist or even as a spectator, it's just what happens every July<\/strong>, and which changes completely the atmosphere<\/strong> of the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What July does to the city<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It starts to be felt from the end of June. The first posters appear on the walls, the terraces start filling up earlier, and there is something in the air that announces that July is arriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July, Avignon<\/strong> is really becoming something else. The evenings are incredibly pleasant<\/strong>, it's hot, the weather's fine, the streets are lively until very late. Plays are performed right in the street, in the squares, between the fa\u00e7ades. You can stumble upon a spectacle<\/strong> completely by chance<\/strong> on the way to buy a baguette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes this period even more particular<\/strong>, it's the contrast with the rest of the year. Winters in Avignon can be quite rude people<\/strong>, the mistral is blowing hard, the streets are often empty, the atmosphere is quiet. You really go from everything to nothing depending on the season<\/strong>. So when July<\/strong> arrives and the city fills up like that, it's almost a chocolate<\/strong> in the nicest possible way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there are the encounters. Over the years, I've been able to cross paths with familiar faces in the streets of Avignon during the Festival Hugh Grant<\/strong>, Denzel Washington<\/strong>, Fran\u00e7ois Cluzet<\/strong>, Jamel Debbouze<\/strong>, Ewan McGregor<\/strong>, Jean Paul Gaultier<\/strong>. People you don't expect to run into in an alleyway between two theatre posters. That's also what Avignon is like in July, a city where anyone might walk past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city as a backdrop<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What is interesting<\/strong> in July, the boundary between everyday life and performance disappears. A street becomes a performance space. The walls of the Palace of the Popes<\/strong> are being covered in posters. The squares are changing function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For someone who works with imagery, tattooing, drawing, or photography, it's a period that really feeds the eye. Everything tries to catch the eye, everything is staged. It's dense, sometimes a bit too much, but it's hard to remain indifferent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Festival brings people to Avignon who wouldn't be here otherwise, curious people, sensitive to images, who have time on their hands. Three weeks in a city really leaves room to think about projects, to make decisions that aren't rushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I take away from every edition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every Festival leaves something behind, an image, an atmosphere, an encounter. It is a time of year when Avignon shows a version of itself that you don't see the rest of the time. For those who live there, it's an annual landmark that people always await with a mixture of excitement and resignation in the face of the crowds. But honestly, July in Avignon is like nothing else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When does the 2026 Avignon Festival take place?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>

\u00a0From 4 to 25 July 2026. The IN and the OFF are taking place on the same dates this year, a first in 25 years.<\/p> <\/div>

What is Avignon like during the Festival?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>

The city changes completely. The evenings are lively, it's warm, the streets are full until late. Theatre is performed right in the street. It's a unique atmosphere that is unlike the rest of the year.<\/p> <\/div>

Is it possible to run into celebrities during the Avignon Festival?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>

Yes, it has happened several times. Over the years you can bump into familiar faces in the streets, actors, artists, fashion personalities. Avignon in July attracts people from everywhere.<\/p> <\/div>

Is it pleasant to visit Avignon in July?<\/strong><\/strong>

The evenings are particularly pleasant, with a gentle warmth, open-air terraces and street performances. The city is lively yet remains accessible. It's one of the best times to visit it.<\/p> <\/div>
