Don’t try to please: choose raw materials

Black and white photograph of British working-class boys sharing a cigarette on a housing estate in the 1970s, reflecting everyday childhood life in Britain.

Not trying to please meaning

is often misunderstood. It is usually framed as a flaw, a lack of adaptability, or an inability to fit in.

This is where the not trying to please meaning becomes clear: choosing

Trying to please is often presented as a quality. Knowing how to adapt.
Smoothing things over. Saying things in an acceptable way. Avoiding unnecessary disturbance.

Not trying to please is not about provocation.

t’s not about being harsh for the sake of it.
It’s about refusing to mask a thought just to make it easier to accept.

Why not trying to please creates discomfort

That’s where the sorting happens.

Clarity over approval

This mechanism is not personal.
It’s structural.

It’s exactly the same with ideas.

Being raw doesn’t mean rejecting nuance.
It means rejecting comfortable vagueness.

Difference isn’t created by seeking approval.
It appears when we stop avoiding.

In the end, what matters isn’t having been liked.
It’s having been clear.

This way of thinking is closely connected to my approach to image and identity, which I explore further in my journal.
